Matt Cockrell is an attorney licensed in the States of Illinois and Indiana with established nationwide experience in the areas of insurance recovery for policyholders, general litigation, dispute resolution, and environmental law.
Matthew Cockrell & Associates, P.C. (the “Firm”) is a law firm uniquely positioned to obtain insurance recoveries and other revenue sources for small and family-owned businesses, as well as governments and large companies, to pay for environmental liabilities, brownfields, product liability claims, product recalls, general tort and toxic tort claims, Director & Officer claims and so on. The Firm is different because most insurance coverage disputes in today’s environment can often be resolved by settlement. Accordingly, the Firm handles these and other disputes with a strong emphasis on settlement which translates to a less costly alternative to larger litigation firms. Of course, when litigation is necessary to achieve the Client’s goals, the Firm can and does vigorously pursue this strategy. The Firm’s client base consists equally of corporate clients and states, cities, states and other governments.
The Firm does not strive to be a single source for all litigation needs. Rather, the Firm’s philosophy is that many of these disputes can be handled effectively without resort to layers of attorneys and consultants. Where necessary or desired by the Client, the Firm partners with known and established local law firms, consulting firms, insurance archeologists, and environmental engineering firms with the complementary skills necessary to resolve any dispute in a flexible and cost effective manner. This team approach significantly reduces overhead because unnecessary resources are not “built into” any specific project. This approach also brings together only those individuals with the knowledge and experience necessary to achieve effective resolution of the particular dispute.
All fees and costs are budgeted by the Firm and approved in advance in writing by the Client. All reasonable efforts are made to reduce our costs consistent, of course, with the performance of superior quality legal services. Only where necessary are additional resources brought in to provide depth and a broader range of professional expertise, typically when local counsel is necessary in a certain city or when engineering or other expert services are required. In these circumstances, the team will be seamless and largely hidden from the Client’s view; unless the Client desires otherwise, the single point of contact and responsibility lies with the Firm. Equally important is the fact that since any such teams are used to working with one another, there will be no duplicative or overlapping work. At the outset of the retention, the Firm will provide the Client with several proposed fee alternatives. Typically, these proposals will identify three options: (a) straight contingency; (b) straight hourly; or (c) modified contingency fee.
FIRM POLICIES
The Firm schedules regular client meetings at least monthly and, often, weekly to provide the Client with status reports and strategies. While these are typically held by telephone, face-to-face meetings are also scheduled on a regular basis.
The Firm has clients throughout the country. As such, it has developed a wide network of additional lawyers, law firms, engineering firms and other consultants as needed by experience, geography, or depth to participate as needed on particular projects. Such partnership arrangements are welcomed and are built into the fee and cost structure.
The Firm does not charge fees incurred during travel. All air travel is by coach, unless otherwise required by the Client.
